HEALTH CORNER:

Why is it important to eat food that’s in season?

Seasonal food is fresher, tastier and more nutritious than food consumed out of season. Even though we all like to eat strawberries year round, the best time to eat them is when they can be purchased directly from a local grower shortly after harvest. Seasonal fruits and vegetables produced on local farms are often fresher, as they do not require long distances for transport. Also, unlike out of season produce which is harvested early in order to be shipped and distributed to your local retail store, crops picked at their peak of ripeness are also better tasting and full of flavor. What’s more, studies have shown that fruits and vegetables contain more nutrients when allowed to ripen naturally on their parent plant.

  • Rachel Smiddy

Meet Rachel Smiddy! Our newest staff member! A Smiddy sister and our Front desk guru/Admin helping on any tasks around the gym, and most importantly getting you set up for a great experience at 321 Wellness — oh, and as well as my [Sarah’s'] personal assistant ;) JK. We are so excited to have her here and contributing to 321 Wellness! She is not only transitioning into a new position, but she has decided to embark on her own fitness journey. Rachel has always been active, but is excited for a new challenge. She will be working out 3x a week and adding in a day for mobility. Sounds like the perfect schedule to me! I am personally excited! Sometimes it can be hard meshing family and business. Don’t tell her, but secretly we’ve been working her since january. Really, though … its been great working with my sister and seeing her apply herself. When its your younger sister you tend to keep them little and needing guidance — but she is smart, independent, well rounded woman and we are lucky to have her at 321 Wellness . Its also is a testament for our vision. We are not here to sell a membership — we want people to see the value in making a personal invest in a lifestyle. Many people don’t know but Rachel has a heart condition, and as she is getting older she is realizing the importance of health and wellness. Being able to see my sister believe in our product and to work along side us is amazing, and I couldn’t ask for a better situation. We also asked Rachel how she is enjoying her first week: ‘I am actually really enjoying the job. The positive environment and meeting all the new people has been awesome. Hours have been a bit rough [as she laughs] …and my boss, well she is tough [laughing again]. No, but I really am having fun, applying skills and learning a lot! My workout the first day was humbling, but heading into day four I am actually feeling pretty good! I am excited to see my progress at the end of this month.’ Rachel will be tracking her progress and testing out all the classes to see which one fits her best. In her first week she has enjoyed the variety of movements, but is most excited for the barbell. Rachel’s Birthday was this week so there were a few more treats around, but there we have mentioned food prep and more sleep next week! Be sure to check back on her progress! xo, Sarah

“Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance.”

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the US, and the second leading cause of cancer death. It affects men and women of all racial and ethnic groups, and is most often found in people 50 years or older. However incidence in those younger than 50 is on the rise. This disease takes the lives of more than 50,000 people every year; we’re here to educate people on how to prevent this disease and lower that statistic.
